Introduction:

The study is a multi-agency effort, led by SLOCOG to determine the needs of a new San Luis Obispo transit center. The San Luis Obispo area is a major hub for both local and regional bus transit services. The existing transfer site used by all RTA routes is already over capacity and there is no accommodation for near term or future growth. In addition, the current layout of the two facilities on separate blocks warrants double-street crossing by transferring riders.

Project Background:

Several planning studies led by the City were previously conducted to assess potential sites in or near the downtown area. The approach taken by the City was to identify a future site suitable for accommodating both a regional transit center and a new parking structure. Between 1990 and 2003, several sites were considered. The project was discontinued by the City Council in August 2003, but included the option to re-activate the project at a later date.
